Family Room Volunteer

Position Description

Ronald McDonald Family Room programs are a vital resource for families with hospitalized children. They provide caregivers with a place to cook meals, grab a quick and free snack or coffee, an area to do laundry, and a comforting reprieve from the environment of the hospital, all while staying just steps away from their child’s hospital bed. These rooms can become an essential space for parents who feel uncomfortable leaving their child alone in the hospital.

RMHC Maine hosts two Family Room programs in Maine. We are currently looking for volunteers in the Bangor Area to help in our Family Room at Nothern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center located on the Pediatric floor.

This position includes duties such as:

  • Volunteer training with the hospital to gain access to the Pediatric Floor
  • Collecting items from the House to bring over and restock. As well as alerting House staff as items run low.
    • Items can include: Snacks, Laundry Detergent, ect
  • Organizing and cleaning out refrigerators, freezers and cupboards
  • Assist with any planned activities or projects as assigned (i.e. crafts, movie night, updating files, etc.)
  • Keeping the room tidy and organized

Orientation and training are provided, and a House staff member is always available on call for support.
This unique position will also work closely with Hospital staff.

What it means to be a Long Term Volunteer

Ronald McDonald House Charities of Maine is only able to continue operations in Maine with the robust support from our volunteers. Our volunteers make our Houses feel like a
“home-away-from-home.”

Volunteer positions that fall under “Long Term” are: Shift Volunteers, Overnight Volunteers, Errand Runners, Family Room Volunteers, and Maintenance Volunteers. All volunteers for these positions
must be over 18 and vaccinated for COVID-19.

We have some volunteers who have been with us for over 18 years, and while we don’t expect that commitment from everyone, we do want to cultivate volunteer relationships that are long-lasting! Volunteers must be able to commit to at least 6 months of service.
